Polyester Resins

Polyester Material Info:
Polyester resins are the most commonly used matrix in the marine and composite industry. These resins are styrene-based, flammable and catalyzed when combined with Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide(MEKP). When working with these resins in large projects it is advised to use gloves and a chemical respirator to protect yourself from the fumes. These resins can be used with any type of fiberglass, carbon fiber or kevlar, as well as used over urethane foam and other sandwich core materials. These resins tend to be fairly rigid when cured and also more brittle than epoxy resins.
Sales Info:
All resins and gelcoats are sold without wax(sanding aid): If needed you can purchase surfacing wax separately for use on finishing coats. Unwaxed resin can be re-coated with little to no prep work but will leave a tacky surface. Mix the wax(sanding aid) with your resin only on your final coats in order to allow easy sanding.
Catalyst/Mixing Ratios: All resin prices include catalyst. 1 Quart= 1ounce, 1 Gallon=2ounce, 5gal=6ounce. The amounts included can be varied based on your temperature and desired curing times. Cooler temperatures may require a higher % of catalyst than warm conditions. If additional
catalyst(MEKP) is needed please order separately. Click Here To View Our Catalyst Mixing Information(.pdf format).
Shelf Life: When purchasing our resins we guarantee their performance for 3 months after your purchase if stored at room temperature with their lids sealed. These resins can last longer than our 3 month guarantee, but we recommended testing a small cup of the resin before using it on an important project. Also, if the resins sit for over a month, we recommended shaking the sealed can or stirring the contents to ensure all solids are properly distributed.
Shipping Info:
Because polyester resins are a flammable liquid, we are unable to ship these products by air freight.
Quarts and Gallons can be shipped by Ground with no extra fees with a maximum of one gallon per box.
5 Gallon pails can be shipped by UPS Ground only and require an additional $37.00 Hazardous Fee(charged by UPS).
Orders for multiple 5 GAL pails can be shipped by a common carrier(freight line) but require delivery to a commercial location or shipped to the freight company terminal's dock, where you can go to pick up the shipment, usually these are located around larger cities. If you need a quote for a large amount, please call us at: 561-588-1001,
Safety Details:
Use personal protective equipment as required. Wear Protective Gloves. Wear eye and face protection. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and hot surfaces. NO Smoking. Use explosion-proof electrical, ventilating, lighting and all material-handling equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Keep containers tightly sealed. Use only in outdoors or in well-ventilated area. Avoid breathing vapor. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. See safety data sheet for detailed information.

404 Tooling Polyester Resin-Isophthalic
404 is an isophthalic polyester resin that is used where strength and durability is a must. Experiences lower shrinkage and a higher heat distortion temperature than orthophthalic type polyester resins. Used extensively in boat hulls and in fiberglass mold construction.

700 Vinyl Ester Resin
Vinyl Ester resin is superior in every property as compared to all polyester resins. This product is used in high-performance applications in which high-strength and maximum heat tolerance is necessary. This resin is extremely chemical resistant when cured. Similar in strength to epoxies with much increased stiffness. Vinyl ester resin will cure slower than most polyester resins and increasing your MEKP ratio may be necessary in cold weather(below 75°F)

# 816 General Purpose Polyester Resin
This general purpose resin can be used for repairs and small project fiberglass construction, where keeping costs low is an important factor. This product will cure rigid and hard like any polyester resin, but we don't recommend it for structural applications.
Color, curing time and workability can vary slightly
from batch to batch.

NOT for use in any structural application.

Polyester Gelcoats

Notes For Gelcoat Application
When Spraying:
We recommend thinning the gelcoat at about 10% by volume with
STYRENE(see link to purchase). This will allow better flow through your gun and better atomization.

When Brushing or Rolling: Adding about 5% to 10% Styrene will help the gelcoat flow out better and reduce brush/roll marks. Remember when brushing gelcoat, un-even thicknesses can cause wrinkling to occur. Tooling gelcoats especially require even thicknesses when applying. Please test your brushing method with these gelcoats before starting on an important project.

Pure White Gelcoat
Our standard pure white gelcoat is designed for exterior use in virtually all types of marine, automotive and general part construction and repair. Isophthalic base ideal for marine applications.
No wax added.
Pigment can be added to change the color of the gelcoat but any color added will be offset by the pure white color.

Please note: Our Surfacing wax (sanding aid) is required for your finish coat in order to sand/polish this product.

Note about choosing tooling gelcoat color:
Most of the time you want to choose the color based upon the surface you are applying the gelcoat onto when making your mold. The more contrast between the two, the better you will gauge the thickness and coverage of the gelcoat. As an example: If you are making a mold off something black you will want Orange Tooling Gelcoat. If you are making a mold off something red, you would likely want the Black Tooling Gelcoat.

Also, you should be prepared for the color of gelcoat you will be making your parts with inside the new mold. More contrast in the color will allow better visibility and ability to gauge coverage.
